It is a mistake to see the people of the business as chess pieces. It is appropriate to see them within their current skills and experience and build environments where they advance.
It will be that some people develop faster than opportunities within the business come about and they will leave – that is the sign of a healthy business.
External input can help break through paradigms about how a business populates certain positions – it is timely to re-evaluate how that is managed. Having the same person n a position year after year is in fact counter productive to the business, and to the person. An agile organisation will develop much more dynamic ways of working with all stake holders.
Owning a position leads to negative motivation that sours a culture. There are big benefits to be had by reconsidering the entire organisation structure and how that is impacted on through dynamic leadership.
